British Values

'But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control.'

Galatians 5:22

At St Teresa’s we are proud to promote values that are both Catholic and British, including: respect for the individual, democracy, individual liberty, respect, tolerance and inclusiveness.  We respect the rights of people who have a faith or belief system that is different to ours and encourage tolerant attitudes towards others’ beliefs.

We promote the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.

We do this by:

Democracy

  • Having pupil groups such as School Council, Eco-Warriors and Liturgy Leaders
  • Ensuring all pupils are listened to by adults
  • Inviting MPs and other speakers to the school

The Rule of Law

  • Creating “class rules”
  • Having a clear behaviour policy that is explained to all
  • Organising visits from the police service to reinforce the message of right and wrong
  • Highlighting the rules of the Church and God through the RE curriculum, for example, The Ten Commandments

Individual Liberty

  • Encouraging pupils to be independent in their learning
  • Providing pupils with opportunities for reflection

Mutual respect

  • Striving for a culture of inclusion
  • Constantly promoting respect for others as good manners
  • Reinforcing the value of everyone’s opinions
  • Having an effective anti-bullying policy
  • Always emphasising that every person is unique and “created in the image of God”
  • Supporting a wide range of charitable works

Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

  • Religious Education provides pupils with a deep understanding of their own faith as well as awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities as a basis for understanding and respecting them
  • Showing how Jesus encouraged tolerance in stories such as The Good Samaritan and The Women at the Well
